Carl Hastings Heebner graduated from UTS and began his studies at the University of Toronto before enlisting in the Royal Flying Corps in February 1917. He trained at Burwash Hall and Camp Borden before receiving his wings in June and obtaining a commission as a Second Lieutenant. He became an instructor at Leaside Camp and taught there until October, when he went overseas for further training in England. He was assigned to the 103rd Squadron of the Royal Air Force to undertake long-distance bombing and artillery observation work and was shot down three times before his final engagement. In the early morning of 24 September 1918 his squadron was conducting a bombing raid behind the German lines when they were attacked by an overwhelming number of enemy aircraft. Heebner was initially reported missing but was later declared to have died in action, and is commemorated in the Lievin Communal Cemetery Extension.
